Our story began back in 2008 when there was only a handful of tour operators in Rome. Today (2024), there are more than 1,000, but the vast majority are not fit for purpose. Since 2008, we have earned our spurs and become one of only a few still respected Rome tour operators.
We've consulted for several independent tour companies in Rome, not the least of which being When In Rome Tours (went bust due to COVID-19 in 2020, last seen supplying Italia Tours with tours that we invented). Angel Tours, Eden Walks, Eternal Tours, and two dozen of the best tour guides Rome has ever known learned all there is to know from us.
As a dedicated team of time-served tourism professionals, with a wealth of knowledge and insight about history, art and archaeology, we are committed to delivering incredible tours and activities that convey the beauty of our city and its environs.
We set out with tours of Etruscan and Pagan Rome. Anzio beachhead battlefield tours followed as Anzio Tours. Pioneering private tours in Rome were curated in 2010. Some visited the catacombs beneath Rome, while others explored places painted by Dutch and Flemish Masters such as Van Wittel. Yet more shed light on Roman cults, one example being a full day tour of Mithraism. There has never been a tour in Rome quite like it since. Naturally, we are working on a relaunch.
At time of writing, we offer 33 tours and activities. New day trips from Rome are coming. Some of our most popular activities include touring Pompeii (and Herculaneum) from Rome. You can easily book tours to Pompeii from Rome on the In Rome Tours website.
We have our own pool of expert guides, all of whom are either archaeologists or art historians with specializations that correlate precisely with the tours they lead for In Rome Tours.
Booking directly with a local tour operator as we are is essential. It directly supports those of us who create and curate original experiences without interference by middlemen (OTAs), i.e. corporates that pay to occupy space at the top of Google and Bing. Why do they advertise? To steal bookings from local small businesses by occupying search engine real estate 24/7, taking a huge cut of bookings revenue in the process.
OTAs ("Online Travel Agencies") are NOT, repeat *NOT* tour operators. They are brandjacking resellers that take upwards of 25% commission per booking. Don't be fooled. Avoid them like the plague if you want to support genuine local tour operators. It's not difficult to stop clicking and tapping on sponsored ads, is it?
Local tour operator listings for Rome on Google.com can be found from about page 2.5 onwards. Ignore the OTAs and their plagiaristic ads. They have zero right to trade off the back of others. Please, always book direct.
Rome is our first city, it influences and inspires everything we do. One part of that is developing interesting activities in new destinations, namely Lviv in Ukraine - book Lviv tours on our In Lviv Tours website; Pompeii in Italy - book private Pompeii tours on our In Pompeii Tours website, and Athens in Greece - book amazing Athens tours and day trips from Athens on our In Athens Tours website. Look out for Italia Trails, our latest venture on the peninsula!
